POSTLOGUE
LOOK UP is the culmination of many of my topics interests, including cyber security, mental health, and experience creation. Ever since Edward Snowden’s information leak highlighted the extent of the government’s digital reach into everyone’s lives, I have become more aware of my relationship with my cellphone, and more selective of sharing personal information online. The exponential development of surveillance technology worries me, especially as countries trend towards nationalistic forms of government. As of today, it’s impossible to escape technology, and that reality is suffocating. We rely on it for almost everything we do. We’ve lost our autonomy.
On a personal note, I noted how my increased screen time during lockdown has weakened my mental health. I felt more isolated than ever, even as I constantly connected with my friends over the phone. I am tired of the notifications, the advertising, and seeing people crossing the road without looking up from their phones. I am disappointed in our current obsession with these devices, and how we let them take our most special moments away from us. I wish to see families dine together again while they share memories, not memes.
This project is my opportunity to take make a public statement against the current status-quo and promote an alternative solution. It’s my way of gaining back control of a larger situation that is out of my hands. The chance to improve someone else’s day, even for only a moment, is rewarding to me. The project will be a platform for me to not only express my own feelings regarding the issue, but also do something about it.
In Peace,
Sabrina Sigismondi
